Internal Medicine

The internists at VMSG-OC combine advanced knowledge in internal medicine with maintenance of high academic standards, excellence in diagnosis, and a detailed approach to treating patients with complex illnesses. At the heart of internal medicine is an unending focus on the care of the patient as a complete individual rather than as a combination of disease entities being treated separately. The patient is the center of our attention and we are devoted to combining the best in modern technology with caring and individualized attention.

Our specialists in Internal Medicine are certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Internists have specialized knowledge and a high level of experience with the treatment and management for a variety of internal medicine problems including:

Endocrinology

Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system which consists of the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, the pancreas, and the hormone-secreting regions of the brain (hypothalamus and pituitary gland). Common endocrine diseases that are diagnosed and managed by our internists include diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, hyper and hypoparathyroidism, hyper and hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease), and hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease).

Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the study of the gastrointestinal tract which includes the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas.

Hematology

Hematology is the study of disorders of the blood system. Many of these disorders result in anemia, or a lack of red blood cells in the body. Other diseases of the blood system include increased red blood cell production, decreased or increased white blood cell production, or diseases of the clotting mechanism such as a lack of platelets (thrombocytopenia).

Immune Mediated Disease

The role of the immune system is to fight off disease caused by foreign pathogens such as bacteria, tick-borne illnesses, viruses, and parasites. Immune mediated (or auto-immune) disease occurs when the patient’s immune system starts attacking the normal cells and tissues of the body.

Infectious Disease

Dogs and cats suffer from an extensive list of infectious diseases. Some are unique to each species and some are common to many species including humans (zoonotic disease). Using the most advanced testing available, we are able to diagnose infectious diseases in pets and to then prescribe the most effective therapies to help treat them.

Respiratory Disease

Respiratory medicine is the study of the upper respiratory tract (including the nose, nasopharynx, larynx and trachea) and the lower respiratory tract (including the bronchi and lower airways).

Nephrology and Urology

Nephrology is the study of the kidneys. Urology is the study of the lower urinary tract which is comprised of the bladder and urethra. Our internists specialize in the diagnosis and management of both acute and chronic kidney diseases as well as all other urinary disorders.

The internal medicine service offers a variety of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including ultrasound, esophagoscopy, gastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, proctoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, vaginoscopy, cystoscopy, joint taps, and bone marrow aspiration and core biopsy. We work as a team with other specialty services at VMSG-OC to obtain the highest level of care and expertise possible.
